Happy New Year! - 1/1/24

Updated: Jan 2

January 1, 2024

My goal for this year is to be intentional, have fun, and improve in the eight facets of life outlined previously.

I'm going to start today by reading the bible. I'll be utilizing this plan:

Also, seriously considering moving from Church of the Good Shepherd (COGS) to Calvary West. I love COGS and the people involved, however, our kids - Brady (12), Ellie (10), and Chase (6) struggle with getting much out of the service.

Another theme of the year is execute. I'm really good at coming up with ideas - execution is a struggle many times due to time limitations, fear of failure, or just mental/physical fatigue.

Part of execution this year will be trying to document something in this journal daily.

I've started a new job as of November 13, 2023 in Neurosurgery. So far it's quite enjoyable - but quite different than my Family Medicine role from March 3, 2009 - November 10, 2023. There are parts of Family Medicine I miss dearly and other parts I'm glad I've moved on. So far I could probably say the same for the Neurosurgery position - but isn't that going to be true for almost any job?

My goals for today are:

Exercise - hopefully run 1 mile and bike 3 miles.

I'm limited by some left lower back pain. This first started after a fall on a mens church retreat in 2019, and flared up again in October 2023 after our annual War at the Shore golf trip. It is certainly better, but has been ailing me for about 5 days now. Guess this is one of the prices of aging -- also, I've noticed a spider vein on my left foot. Dislike. But these are both minor in the grand scheme of life!

Read the Bible based on the plan outlined above.

Plan for 2024 at work.

We were to have a schedule / plan already decided upon at work - but that hasn't happened as of yet.

I'm going to outline my plan below - if for nothing else, getting something on paper and perhaps present it to my colleagues when / if the time is right.

Proposal:

Start date: Week of March 1, 2024

Current OR dates: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday.

I will see pts in the office and alternate every other week with Sarah. The other person will cover the hospital.

Clinic duties:

  1. See all outpatient office visits

  2. On OR days - manage the calls and patient advise request as best as possible.

  3. Refill medications

  4. Work on template - is there a lunch break?

Hospital duties:

  1. Round on patients

  2. Consults - only when we're on call?

  3. OR first assist.

  4. On non-OR days manage the inbox and help catch up paperwork - ? how best to get paperwork to hospital location?

  5. Discharge pts

  6. Opportunity to leave early on Wednesday and Friday? - esp if on call that weekend or taking phone call?
